Govt-allied party leaders to convene at Energy Minister's residence

    October 5, 2021 - Hiru News

Sri Lanka, Oct. 5 -- Government party leaders are scheduled to convene at the residence of Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila again tomorrow to discuss the controversial Kerawalapitiya Yugadanavi power plant agreement and the current political situation.

The issues discussed at the previous meeting held at Minister Wimal Weerawansa's residence and the agreements reached during the discussion with the Prime Minister will be discussed again.

There is a lot of discussion about awarding the construction of the natural gas pipeline system and storage complex at the Kerawalapitiya Yugadanavi power plant to the New Fortress Energy Company of USA without calling for tenders.

Representatives of the government's allies met at the Communist Party of Sri Lanka headquarters recently to discuss the deal.

Later, the leaders of the government's partner parties met with former President Maithripala Sirisena and then met Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

New Fortress Energy Inc. and the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka ("GOSL") jointly announced that they have executed a definitive agreement for New Fortress' investment in West Coast Power Limited ("WCP"), the owner of the 310 MW Yugadanavi Power Plant based in Colombo, along with the rights to develop a new LNG Terminal off the coast of Colombo, the capital city.
