MOSCOW, November 18. /TASS/. Russia has turned into one of global leaders in the decarbonization process owing to pure power generation and great absorbing ability of ecosystems, President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday at the extended board meeting of the Foreign Ministry.
"The problem of climate change is becoming increasingly more acute. Russia is participating proactively and creatively in its solution. Pure nuclear and hydropower sector, gas-fired electricity generation and the enormous absorbing ability of our forests and ecosystems turned our country into one of leaders in the global decarbonization process," the head of state said.
Russia has set the task for itself to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 at the latest but it does not mean that the goal cannot be achieved earlier, Putin stressed.
"We have recently made a critical decision on implementation of a new program - the program of energy efficiency improvement for the economy by 2035. This is the first phase only. The program will be an element of achieving the intended more global goal - to ensure carbon neutrality by 2060 at the latest. It does not mean it cannot be earlier. I said - not later," the President noted. --0--vnk
