Poland : Minister Moscow at the ceremony of laying the foundation stone for the construction of two PGE gas units at Dolna Odra Power Plant

    November 29, 2021 - Al Bawaba Business

Today's ceremony of laying the foundation stone for the construction of two low-emission gas and steam units at Dolna Odra Power Plant is an important day for the Polish energy sector. This investment will allow for the energy transformation taking into account the conditions of the national energy mix, "said Anna Moskwa, Minister of Climate and Environment, on November 25, 2021, during the ceremony of laying the cornerstone for the construction of this investment.

As Minister Moscow pointed out, the new steam and gas units at Dolna Odra Power Plant are one of the most important investments, serving the implementation of the "Poland's energy policy until 2040" and as part of a just energy transition towards low and zero emissions.

Without new steam and gas units at the Dolna Odra Power Plant, it will not be possible to achieve the goals of PEP2040. 2.5 million households are waiting for this investment, which will be supplied with electricity and heat, she said.

The construction of two new gas units will allow the generation potential of the Dolna Odra power plant to be reconstructed. The new unit powered by low-emission gas will replace the decayed coal capacity, contributing to the gradual decarbonisation of electricity generation in Poland. This investment guarantees the long-term operation of the power plant, which plays a strategic role in the National Power System as the only system generator for the north-western part of Poland.

The new generation units will also allow the use of the potential resulting from the availability of fuel delivered to the LNG terminal in ?winouj?cie and the planned route of the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline. In addition, the new blocks will be highly flexible, which is important due to the large installed capacity of onshore wind farms in Pomerania and the planned new capacity in offshore wind farms.

"This investment is also necessary because it is necessary to balance the energy system along with the growing role of renewable energy sources," Minister Moscow emphasized.

Congratulations on the pace of this investment as well. The advancement of the construction of two gas and steam units is ahead of the planned schedule - the start of operation of the new power units is planned for the fourth quarter of 2023. " - she added.

Two generating units with a total capacity of nearly 1,400 MW will be built in Nowy Czarnw, which will not only be the most modern in Poland, but will also be at the forefront of the most modern gas-fired power plants in Europe.
