Azerbaijan's activities in energy sector - commendable, says Iranian minister

    December 8, 2021 - Trend News Agency

      BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 8

      By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

Azerbaijan has carried out many commendable activities in the field of energy, including, in the field of gas extraction and electricity generation, Iranian Energy Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian said, Trend reports citing the ministry.

He made the remark during a meeting with Azerbaijani Ambassador to Iran Ali Alizada.

Mentioning the water and energy fields, Mehrabian noted that it is necessary to make maximum use of the joint potential of the two countries on the border rivers through continuous dialogue.

The minister also added that Azerbaijan and Iran can further develop trade as well as expand cooperation in energy sector.

Currently, the focus is on improving the Giz Galasi, Khudafarin hydro junctions and hydroelectric power plants on the Araz River (on the Azerbaijan-Iran border), said Mehrabian.

The Giz Galasi and Khudafarin hydro junctions have a capacity of more than 1.6 billion cubic meters. Also, the hydroelectric power plants of the same name will have a capacity to generate 280 megawatt-hours of electricity in total. These hydro junctions and hydroelectric power plants will allow both sides to share the water and energy resources of the Araz River.

“According to the latest information, necessary equipment for hydroelectric power plants has been purchased and transported to the area,” he said.

Mehrabian also pointed out Iran is ready to continue and develop electricity exchange with Azerbaijan, in particular, Iran is ready to start cooperating with Russia and Azerbaijan regarding the synchronization of electricity networks.

"Given that the three countries have different peak times for electricity consumption in summer and winter, it is possible to increase electricity transit in various ways," he said.

During the meeting, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Iran Ali Alizada noted that Azerbaijan is interested in developing relations with Iran.
