Qatar: A reliable source of gas

    January 27, 2022 - Oman Daily Observer

The experience of Qatar in the field of extracting and marketing natural gasis firmly established in the world. This is also evident from the Gulf state's success in signing contracts with a number of industrialised countries for the expansion of gas production and the utilisation of this energy resource. As Qatar holds huge reserves of natural gas, it has the ability to undertake major industrial and commercial projects for decades to come. The Sultanate of Oman is among a number of countries importing Qatari gas through the Dolphin network. Qatar supplies gasto other Arab countries as well. In 2021, Qatar signed a number of agreements to sell natural gas to various countries, especially Asian industrial nations, including China, which has seen its industry return to pre-pandemic levels after two years of difficulties attributable to the spread of the coronavirus. Qatar began to deliver LNG shipments to several countries in 1999. China has remained the largest market, followed by other Asian countries, including Taiwan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, South Korea and others. The Qatari government is currently evaluating commercial offers to double the production capacities of its LNG plants. The gas sector has provided many job opportunitiesforits citizens and expatriates who are flocking in large numbers to the Gulf state. Doha pumps huge investments not only in the field of gas, but also in various other economic projects. What distinguishesthe gas projectsin Qatarfrom other sectors is the special emphasis on environmental safety. It has invested in carbon sequestration, which will help raise gas production during the current decade by 2030. During the past year, the State of Qatar was able to sign a number of agreements to sell its gas to markets around the world. This further affirms its commitment to meet the growing energy needs of various countries. Some of the countries importing Qatari LNG have today become major strategic partners with Doha in the field of energy. Other countries are adopting advanced environmental policies to meet the challenges resulting from continuing the process of production, export, transport and discharging LNG. These giant projects ensure great economic and financial returns for Qatar in the future. It is also working to attract more local and foreign investmentsinto the country, which has expanded its economy significantly during the past three decades. Qatar is indeed a reliable source of energy for the entire region.
