BGE’s Innovative Smart Home Solutions Pilot Receives ENERGY STAR Certification

    January 27, 2022 - Contify Energy News

BALTIMORE, Jan. 25 -- BGE issued the following news release:

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certified BGE’s Smart Home Solutions as the first ever ENERGY STAR Smart Home Energy Management System. ENERGY STAR is the government-backed symbol for energy efficiency, making it easy for consumers and businesses to purchase products that save them money and protect the climate.

BGE’s Smart Home Solutions was a pilot program that brought together innovative technology that allowed customers to more closely monitor and control their home’s energy use from anywhere at any time.

BGE, in partnership with SmartMark Communications, brought the energy-saving smart home technology to 200 customers through the Connected Home and Small Business Demonstration, a 2020-2021 demonstration study in Annapolis, Md. The platform, enabled by BGE’s smart grid investments, gave users tools to remotely control lights, thermostats, and outlets for energy savings.

“Our ability to find a way to combine innovative smart home products with the capabilities enabled by BGE’s smart grid technology shows that we are focused on meeting our customers’ future energy needs,” said Alexander Núñez, BGE senior vice president of Governmental, Regulatory & External Affairs. “We are proud to align technology and the needs of our customers with our Path to Clean goal to achieve net-zero operational emissions by 2050. As we push to this goal, we will continue to experiment with new technologies, offerings, and platforms to empower our customers as they seek to improve their energy efficiency and help to address climate goals.”

BGE has a long history of offering customers ENERGY STAR certified products, services and programs. BGE was awarded ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year— Sustained Excellence Award for the eleventh time in 2021. The Sustained Excellence classification recognizes organizations that have received the Partner of the Year award more than three times and continue to surpass previous energy efficiency achievements.

Since the inception of the BGE Smart Energy Savers Program® in 2008, customers have reduced their electricity use by 5.6+ billion kilowatt hours. These savings are equivalent to eliminating approximately 3.7 million metric tons of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, removing 805,000 cars from the road for one year, or planting 61 million trees.
