Natural gas storage in Germany reaches 70%.

    August 7, 2022 - Staff Oil & Gas Magazine

Data from the Network Agency show that storage levels exceed the German government's expectations.

Germany's gas storage levels are now above 70% of capacity, according to data released today by the German Network Agency, exceeding the German government's expectations.

The latest data, corresponding to Wednesday, is at 70.4%, so it is estimated that this Friday it will reach 72%.

The German government's goal is to reach 75% of storage capacity by September 1 and 95% by November, which is considered to guarantee the necessary supply for the whole winter.

However, the strategy depends on the supply it receives through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which is currently operating with one turbine.

Gazprom completely interrupted supplies in mid-July, arguing that maintenance work had to be carried out. When service was restored, the volume was down to 20% of its capacity, compared to 40% previously.

Despite this situation, Germany has managed to keep up the pace of storage for the winter. This is partly because reserves from a coal-fired plant that has been reactivated are being used for electricity consumption.

In addition, energy savings have begun to be made in public buildings, monument lighting, swimming pools and other facilities.
