Brussels — The European Union needs to remove the incentive for "Russia to manipulate" Europe's gas supply by introducing a price cap, EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson said on Friday.
"The answer is clear. We have to offer price cap for all Russian gas, not only pipeline, but also LNG," Simson said, referring to liquefied natural gas, on her arrival to an emergency meeting in Brussels.
As well as backing a Russian gas price cap, the EU energy commissioner said lower prices should be negotiated with the rest of the bloc's gas suppliers.
Simson said the reason the bloc has not introduced such a cap just yet is "different member states do expect different solutions."
She was, however, confident that EU ministers will agree on emergency levies as a first set of EU-wide emergency measures to relieve consumers and businesses from soaring energy bills.
