Saudi energy minister says two new natural gas fields discovered

    December 2, 2022 - BBC Newsfile

      By BBC Monitoring

The Saudi energy minister has said that the kingdom's state oil company Aramco has discovered two natural gas fields in the country's Eastern Province.

State news agency SPA quoted Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman as saying on 30 November that the Awtad gas field had been discovered south-west of the Ghawar field in al-Ahsa in the Eastern Province.

According to the report, gas was flowing from one well at Awtad at a rate of 10 million cubic feet per day plus 740 barrels of condensate, and from another well at 16.9 million cubic feet per day plus 65 barrels of condensate.

The al-Dahnaa gas field was discovered 230km south-west of the city of al-Dhahran, where one well produced 8.1 million cubic feet per day and another, 17.5 million cubic feet per day plus 362 barrels of condensate.

The energy minister stressed the importance of the discovery, which he said strengthened the kingdom's natural gas reserves, thus contributing to the goals of its liquid fuel displacement programme.

One of the objectives of the kingdom's Vision 2030 - a programme of social and economic reforms aimed at diversifying the Gulf state's economy away from oil - is to increase the share of natural gas and renewable energy sources to approximately 50% by 2030, while reducing the use of liquid fuel.
