Japan?s imports of Russian LNG up 4.6% in 2022, its share rises to 9.54%

    January 20, 2023 - ITAR-TASS

TOKYO, January 19. /TASS/. Japan?s imports of liquified natural gas (LNG) from Russia increased by 4.6% in the 2022 calendar year, while its share in the total structure of the country?s LNG imports rose to 9.54% from 8.84% in the previous year, according to TASS? calculations based on figures released by the Japanese finance ministry on Thursday.

In value terms LNG imports soared by 82.4% amid an increase in global energy prices. Coal imports from Russia fell by 41.3% in physical terms, and surged by 61.7% in value terms.

Meanwhile, Japan did not import Russian oil for the fourth consecutive month in December. Purchases of oil and petroleum products were brought to zero last June, after which the country bought minor volumes in July and August, and fully suspended imports of those energy resources again in September. Later Tokyo joined the mechanism of the price cap on Russian oil. As a result, oil imports from Russia plunged by 56.4% in 2022. The total cost of Russian energy imports increased by 40.1%.

Japan?s total imports of energy from all countries climbed by 96.8% in value terms amid an increase in import volumes and growth of prices. --0--tre
