ScottMadden Joins Xcel Energy to Explore Strategy in Grid Modernization Initiatives

    October 25, 2018 - ScottMadden

ScottMadden, Inc., one of North America’s leading management consulting firms specializing in energy, recently joined industry leaders as a sponsor and presenter at the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) Strategic Issues Roundtable. The meeting brought together key industry players and decision makers from electric utilities and encouraged discussion and interaction on the key issues facing the electric power industry.

Josh Kmiec, manager at ScottMadden, joined John Lee, senior director at Xcel Energy, to discuss Xcel Energy’s grid modernization initiative across its operating companies. Focus topics included grid modernization trends across the United States and specific lessons learned at Xcel Energy. The presentation covered both the staging of the investments to build incremental capabilities over time and the strategy for engaging stakeholders and regulators across jurisdictions.

“We find ourselves in an interesting time in which utilities are increasingly pursing various grid modernization investments. Utilities are receiving increased scrutiny from regulators and stakeholders regarding those investments. This makes the development of a compelling narrative and coherent supporting justification for grid modernization efforts even more important for utilities,” comments Mr. Kmiec.

Cristin Lyons, partner and energy practice leader at ScottMadden, attended the event and noted, “Grid modernization, managed well, enables a utility to maintain or increase reliability while managing an increasingly diverse resource mix both at the wholesale and distribution levels.”
