Paula Gold-Williams, CEO of CPS Energy, Stops by the Energy Central Power Perspectives Podcast to Discuss the FlexPOWER? Bundle and Bringing San Antonio Citizens Clean, Affordable, & Reliable Power

    February 16, 2021 - Feb 16, 2021

As a part of the Leadership Series on the Energy Central Power Perspectives Podcast, Paula Gold-Williams, the CEO of CPS Energy in San Antonio, joined Matt Chester (Energy Central's Community Manager) and Audra Drazga (VP of the Power Industry Network) to share insights connected to the Flexible Path Strategy and the recent RFP for the FlexPOWER Bundle.

In this episode , Paula discusses the motivation behind CPS Energy's forward-looking path. She gives listeners a peek behind the curtain on the lessons learned in their successful endeavors to bring clean, reliable power generation to the San Antonio community, even amidst the unexpected challenges that the COVID pandemic has thrust upon them. Specifically, via CPS Energy's Flexible Path strategy, the utility is looking at how to most thoughtfully discover, explore, and implement new power generation in the coming years, seeking input from innovators and partners across the sector to replace the utility's aging generation capacity with new, cleaner generation.

The major theme of these initiatives at CPS Energy and Paula's line of thinking come down to flexibility and adaption. As she notes in this episode:

"With CPS Energy being in business for 160 years, we're really good at developing and building power plants, operating them, and then decommissioning them. And we also were really good for planning for them and figuring out when to put the next base-load fossil fuel plant in play so that it could accommodate growth. But in 2017, I said, "Look, if technology is going to change, we have to think differently. And we have to be much more open to innovation and make sure that we're thinking about doing things maybe even very extremely different than when we had to be before." And simplistically, it came out as we just needed to be flexible."

Paula brings a unique, influential, and powerful voice to all industry discussions she joins. She is the nation's only African American Female Energy CEO, she sits at the helm of the nationals largest municipally-owned and fully -integrated electric and gas utility, and she has been setting an example to utility executives worldwide on how to put People First in everything CPS Energy undertakes. Utility professionals from the board room to the engineering teams to the lineworkers and everyone in between will all resonate with the message Paula shares in this can't-miss episode of the Power Perspectives Podcast.

This entry into the podcast , like all of the series episodes, can be found on all major podcast outlets, including iTunes and Spotify, or it can be listened to directly on the Energy Central platform. Give it a listen and share your reaction in the comments.
