Alcohol-free brewery Drop Bear achieves B Corp status

    December 6, 2021 - Daniel Woolfson

Alcohol-free craft brewery Drop Bear Beer Co has joined the likes of BrewDog, Charlie Bigham’s and Dash in becoming a B Corp.

The Swansea business has become the first brewery in Wales to win the accreditation, with a score of 83.9, having embarked on a range of sustainability initiatives since its launch in 2019.

For instance, it uses a 100% renewable energy-powered vehicles, plastic-free packaging, sells organic cotton t-shirts and operates a paperless office. It has also recently switched from bottles to 330ml cans.

It also claims that, by ”supporting numerous projects worldwide” it has carbon offset 64 tonnes of greenhouse gasses and planted over 800 trees, with initiatives such as its‘Cheers to Trees’ campaign, through which a tree is planted for every order received through the brand’s website until 1January 2022.

Drop Bear’s goal was “to brew the best alcohol-free craft beer and help build a better world in which to drink it”, said its sales and marketing director Joelle Drummond.

The news comes as the brand is currently building what will be Wales’ first alcohol-free brewery, due to open in 2022, after raking in a £1.9m cash injection from investors in January 2021.

October saw it secure its first major retail listing with Ocado, with the online retailer stocking its entire range of beers: Tropical IPA, Yuzu Pale Ale, Bonfire Stout, and New World Lager. All its beers ring in at below 0.5% abv, are vegan-friendly and gluten-free.

The brand has also secured some international distribution to date. Its beers are sold in Australia, Canada, Finland, New Zealand, Singapore and Spain.
