Swiss BKW to source power from 10.3 MW solar-plus-storage project in Germany

    January 18, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

January 18 (Renewables Now) - Swiss energy company BKW AG (SWX:BKW) will offtake the electricity from a 10.3-MW solar-plus-storage project in southern Germany, which is currently under construction, as part of a five-year power purchase agreement (PPA).

The PPA was signed with German engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services provider MaxSolar GmbH which is building the solar plant in northern Bavaria, BKW said last week.

The solar park with integrated battery storage is located on an area of some 12.8 hectares (31.63 acres) in the village of Reckertshausen, Bavaria. When completed, it is expected to generate enough electricity to supply about 2,630 households and avoid 3,674 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

The completion of construction works is expected shortly.

The hybrid system was among the winners in the innovation tender of Germany's Federal Network Agency.

BKW operates more than 50 hydropower plants across Switzerland and Italy which account for about half the electricity produced by the group. In addition, it supplies electricity from solar and wind power, as well as biomass, nuclear power, gas, and coal.

At the end of 2019, BKW decommissioned its Muehleberg nuclear power plant. It seeks to raise the share of renewables in the installed capacity of the group to 75% by 2023.
