Ofgem preps OFTO tender for Scotland's 1.1-GW Seagreen offshore complex

    January 19, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

January 19 (Renewables Now) - UK energy regulator Ofgem on Tuesday said it is inviting tenders for the ownership and operation of electricity links to connect the 1.1-GW Seagreen Phase 1 offshore wind farm in Scottish waters.

The pre-built links to be tendered include offshore and onshore substations and cables connecting the wind farm to the UK mainland near Carnoustie in Angus. Bidders will compete to become Offshore Transmission Owners (OFTOs) of the transmission assets.

The competition will be the ninth tender round under the OFTO regime, which has so far selected owners and operators for 23 connections for 9.5 GW of offshore turbine capacity. Ofgem said it will hold a webinar in regard to the process on January 20.

With a total capacity of 1,075 MW, Seagreen Phase 1 is being built 27 km (16.8 miles) off the Angus Coast in the Firth of Forth. Its 114 Vestas turbines of the V164-10.0 MW model will be capable of producing around 5,000 GWh of electricity that will be enough to supply around 1.6 million homes.

Once in operation, it will become Scotland’s largest and deepest offshore wind farm. Last month, the complex had its first turbine put in place.

Seagreen Phase 1 is owned by a partnership between SSE Renewables, a unit of UK utility SSE plc (SSE:LON), and TotalEnergies (EPA:TTE).
