Finnish power company Fortum and Swedish telecommunications company Telia have signed a collaboration agreement to connect the Telia Helsinki Data Center (HDC) in Finland to the electricity market. Through the collaboration, the Telia HDC's Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) systems manufactured by ABB Finland, part of Switzerland-headquartered technology company ABB, will take part in balancing production and consumption fluctuations in the electricity market.
The Fortum Spring virtual battery utilises the customer's existing assets to support the power grid. Since the end of summer 2021, the Telia HDC has contributed several megawatts of capacity to Finlands electricity transmission system operator (TSO) Fingrid's Fast Frequency Reserve (FFR) market as part of the virtual battery. If a major disruption occurs in the balancing of the grid, Telia's UPS equipment will respond within a few hundred milliseconds and help in recovery from the disruption.
