After 17 years, the Nation launches a new wind farm

    January 22, 2022 - CE Noticias Financieras

The country continues to bet on the energy transition as one of the main public policies that seek social and economic development in the reactivation. This Friday Guajira I was inaugurated, the first wind farm to come into operation in Colombia after 17 years. "Three years ago in our country there were only 28 megawatts (MW) of non-conventional renewable energy installed capacity. Today, thanks to the collaboration between the public and private sectors, we now have more than 2,800 MW, 100 times more than what we had in August 2018," said President Iván Duque Márquez. . Guajira I was built by Isagen in the town of Cabo de la Vela, in the municipality of Uribia, in La Guajira. The project had investments of $75,000 million and generated more than 50 jobs that benefited the communities in the area of influence of the wind farm, including Taruasaru, Mushalerrain and Lanshalia. The complex has 10 wind turbines in an area of 5.5 hectares, has an installed capacity of 20 MW which is equivalent to the energy consumption of 33,295 families. "Guajira I is one of the great milestones of the energy transition, as it is the first wind farm to be built in the country in 17 years and the first of 14 farms to be built in the next 3 years. This department is the epicenter of the energy transition in Colombia, since the department has a world-class wind regime", said Diego Mesa, Minister of Mines and Energy. The official added that "with the inauguration of the new wind farm, the country continues to consolidate the Energy Transition as the main legacy for the present and future of Colombia". The construction of Guajira I was completed in December 2021 and is expected to enter commercial operation during the first half of 2022. The large-scale renewable energy project will strengthen the generation matrix and will mark a milestone by being the first to deliver this type of electricity to the National Interconnected System (SIN). Start with tests With the inauguration of the wind complex, the power generation tests of the clean electricity source plant begin. "This milestone reflects the Company's aspiration to create value with clean energy, delivering to the country a project without high-risk events, which advances according to the agreements of previous consultations with the communities in the area of influence, certified as Clean Development Mechanism and within the estimated deadlines and budget," says a statement from Isagen. For the company's general manager, Camilo Marulanda, the wind farm offers wind speeds that are double the world average, so it is expected to generate clean energy constantly, complementing our matrix, mainly water, to be more resilient to climate change". Guajira I renewable projects is one more step in Isagen's sustainable growth process, says Marulanda. The company closed 2021 with $3 billion invested in 14 plants, including nine hydroelectric plants totaling 190 MW, which the company is already operating efficiently and safely in the department of Antioquia," said the business leader. Marulanda added that, "with the support of the Board of Directors and as a sign of confidence and a contribution to the reactivation, this year Isagen will reinforce the matrix with more renewable megawatts: Guajira I with 20 MW and WESP with 12 MW more wind and works with more than 40% of progress adjacent to Guajira I. In addition, it acquired two solar farms in Meta that total 38 MW and come into operation in a few months". Isagen is also developing 850 MW in wind projects in La Guajira, of which the Guajira II project (400 MW in the municipality of Maicao) already has an Environmental License and Prior Consultation protocolized with the indigenous communities. The company will also deploy 100 MW solar in the municipality of Sabanalarga (Atlántico). The joint development of all these initiatives will involve investments of more than $6 billion in the coming years. "Isagen's plan to 2023 is to increase our renewable capacity by prioritizing solar, hydro and wind projects," stressed Marulanda, and emphasized that the organization will continue to be aligned with energy transition policies. Ruta del Sol improvements The Nation put into operation 86 kilometers (km) of new road and improvement of Ruta del Sol 3. "Of the total km executed, 72.9 km are of second carriageway and 13.5 km of rehabilitation and improvement of the existing road", states a press release from the Presidency of the Republic. The works were executed in sections 1, 2, 6 and 8, which are part of the nine segments into which the project is divided. The sections are located between San Roque - La Loma; La Loma - Bosconia; El Difícil - Plato Magdalena, and between Bosconia - Valledupar, in Cesar.
