Stuttgart's municipal utility plans 25 MWp of rooftop solar

    January 24, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

January 24 (Renewables Now) - German utility Stadtwerke Stuttgart (SWS) will install at least 25 MWp of photovoltaic (PV) systems on the roofs of buildings from the portfolio of local municipal landlord Stuttgarter Wohnungs- und Staedtebaugesellschaft mbH (SWSG) and supply the electricity to tenants.

All suitable roofs in SWSG's portfolio will be equipped with PV installations and this will be enough to supply about 9,000 apartments, the two companies said on Friday.

The utility plans to deploy between 3 MWp and 5 MWp of rooftop solar capacity annually which will reduce SWSG's carbon emissions by between 2.5% and 4%. The first PV systems will be installed in the summer of this year.

The cooperation between the two Stuttgart-based municipal companies will not only advance the energy transition but also provide SWSG's tenants with an option to benefit from a lower tariff for green electricity, said SWSG's chief executive Samir Sidgi.

As part of its Climate Protection Goals 2030, SWSG aims to reduce its average area-specific carbon emissions by at least 35-40% by the end of the decade. It has a portfolio of about 19,000 own residential units and more than 407 commercial properties.
