EDP Renewables (EDPR), through its subsidiary EDP Renewables North America LLC, has completed its first wind farm repowering project in the United States, the company said.
Specifically, it is the Blue Canyon II wind farm, which is one phase of the four-phase 423 megawatt (MW) project located in southwestern Oklahoma. Through this repowering, the project's installed capacity increases from 151 MW to 162 MW.
The project represents a key step in extending the life and efficiency of this wind farm, which will continue to serve Oklahomans with affordable energy and economic benefits for future generations.
EDP's 'green' subsidiary anticipates that the repowering operation of its Blue Canyon II wind farm will extend the life of the project by 20 to 30 years. Of the 84 turbines at the farm, 73 have been repowered, replacing the nacelle, blades and upper tower section of each turbine. The turbines were upgraded from 1.8 MW V80 machines to 2 MW V110 machines.
