Public Utilities Commission says CEB has not been given permission for power cuts

    January 25, 2022 - Lanka Puvath

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) Janaka Rathnayake has said that the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has not been given approval to disconnect electricity and the relevant recommendations will be given, tomorrow. During a media briefing today, the PUCSL chairman requested the public not to get misled by rumors spread by various parties and trade unions on power interruption.

The Electricity Board has requested the Commission for permission to impose daily power cuts. However, with the intervention of political authorities, steps have been taken to issue oil needed for power generation, he said.

The official said that owners of generators have also expressed their willingness to supply electricity. Kelanithissa, Sojitz and Thulhiriya Power Plants can generate electricity for few more days.

Some people have not paid electricity bills for nearly two years amid the pandemic, which is a huge loss to the CEB, he pointed out. Therefore, the PUCSL chairman requested the public to pay the arrears in their electricity bills.
