Enel S.p.A. - Enel X and Grimaldi join forces for the sustainability of ships in port

ENEL X AND GRIMALDI JOIN FORCES FOR THE SUSTAINABILITY OF SHIPS IN PORT

      • The Enel Group's global business line and the Neapolitan group's maritime transport and logistics company sign a memorandum of understanding for decarbonisation in ports

Rome, January 26th, 2022 - Electrification of ports, projects developed using renewable energies such as photovoltaic and wind power, sharing of analyses on cold ironing and development of sustainable business models also based on onboard and onshore storage systems (batteries): these are the aims of the memorandum of understanding signed by Enel X and Grimaldi Euromed, a Grimaldi Group company. The collaboration brings together information, know-how and experience related to the development of cold ironing infrastructure in the country's most important ports, which is being funded under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

"The collaboration with Grimaldi," saidAugusto Raggi, Head of Enel X Italy, "will give a further boost to the process of decarbonisation and electrification of ports. With this agreement we are aiming to embark on a virtuous path in a strategic sector for the country, and the preparation of joint studies, preparatory to designing business models that are above all sustainable, are consistent with Enel X's mission and its constant commitment to electrification and energy efficiency, including in the maritime and port spheres."

"The agreement signed with Enel X will allow the Grimaldi Group to consolidate the path of decarbonisation for its ships during their stops in port, which it has already been undertaking for some time," affirmedEmanuele Grimaldi, CEO of the Grimaldi Group. "The Grimaldi Group, which has always been committed to the continuous reduction of emissions from its ships, is in fact a pioneer in 'Zero Emissions in Port', having already installed huge batteries on board several of its ships that allow them not to emit any harmful substances into the atmosphere during their stay in port. The collaboration with Enel X will make it possible to extend this possibility to ships not equipped with batteries, thus enabling the Grimaldi fleet to confirm its leadership in the sector."

Enel X and Grimaldi will carry out joint analyses involving both ships and terminals, focusing on distributed generation and electricity storage both on board ship and in shore facilities. These also include energy efficiency and the reduction of emissions in maritime and port areas, cold ironing solutions for the power supply of ships on the quayside, and the management and optimisation of energy exchanges both inside and outside the infrastructures.
