China takes lead in offshore wind after 16.9 GW of 2021 additions

    January 27, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

January 27 (Renewables Now) - China has reached about 26.4 GW of cumulative offshore wind power generating capacity after connecting to the grid a total of 16.9 GW of turbines at sea in 2021, state-owned CCTV reported this week.

The broadcaster quoted data from the National Energy Administration according to which China now ranks first in the world in terms of grid-connected offshore wind farms. BloombergNEF data cited by Bloomberg News shows that the 16.9 GW installed in China last year represents almost half the world’s total installed offshore capacity before 2021.

At the very end of 2021, China Three Gorges SA (CTG) announced the full commissioning of three offshore wind projects totalling 3.1 GW, including the nation’s first gigawatt-scale offshore wind park, the 1.7-GW Shapa plant near Yangjiang in Guangdong province.

In total, China has added about 53 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) and 47.6 GW of on- and-offshore wind capacity last year. The former figure includes some 29.2 GW of distributed solar PV.
