New Jersey offshore wind transmission plan advances with FERC filing

    January 28, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

January 28 (Renewables Now) - The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) and PJM Interconnection on Thursday filed for approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) an agreement on the state’s offshore wind transmission grid solicitation.

New Jersey targets 7,500 MW of offshore wind by 2035. In 2020, it became the first state to seek to make use of the so-called State Agreement Approach (SAA) when it asked PJM to integrate its offshore wind goals into the regional transmission planning process.

PJM and NJBPU have already requested proposals from developers for onshore and offshore transmission facilities to deliver power from offshore wind farms. After FERC accepts the first-of-its-kind joint agreement filed yesterday, the NJBPU will be able to select one or more of 80 proposals put forward by developers.

According to PJM and NJBPU, New Jersey's State Agreement Approach could become a national model for incorporating state clean energy priorities into the regional transmission planning process.

“Providing a framework for implementing the State Agreement Approach is a critical next step on the pathway for efficient offshore wind interconnection between the approved wind farms and the onshore grid,” said NJBPU president Joseph L Fiordaliso.
