Endesa has achieved a net increase in its customer base of 180,000 electricity customers in the first half of the year, a historic milestone that has allowed it to become the leader in the retail electricity market in the last quarter of 2021 according to internal estimates, ahead of the energy company headed by Ignacio Sánchez Galán.
Endesa increased its total customer base by almost 60 thousand residential customers in Spain between October and December last year and has continued the upward trend during this first quarter of 2022, even doubling the figure compared to the previous quarter, exceeding 120 thousand customers net increase according to internal company data at the end of March.
This brings the total customer base of Endesa's distributors to almost 10 million. Endesa Energía in Spain now has a total of 5.8 million electricity customers in the free market and 4.1 million customers in the regulated market.
This expansion of the customer base has taken place against an unprecedented backdrop in the energy sector. Prices on the daily electricity market have broken historical records, driven by an unprecedented increase in the price of gas and, to a lesser extent, CO2 emission allowances. This circumstance has particularly affected customers in the regulated market, which is more exposed to these fluctuations, and has led to a strong transfer of customers to the free market, where Endesa has increased its residential and small business customer base by 660,000 in the six-month period under analysis.
The cost of electricity in the daily electricity market increased by 128% in the first half of the year, according to data analyzed by the company itself.
Growth in Portugal
The energy company has also increased its market share in Portugal, both in electricity and natural gas, and has strengthened its position as the second largest operator in the country with more than 600,000 customers, including individuals and companies. According to data published by the Energy Services Regulatory Entity (ERSE) for January of this year (the latest official data available), Endesa has achieved a 10.4% share of consumption in the residential segment, seven tenths of a percent more than in the previous month.
