The road to electric mobility in the Argentine market in the 21st century was opened by two Japanese companies. Toyota took the first step among hybrids, when it introduced the Prius in November 2009, a pioneer car in the world that came out in 1997. And Nissan put the first plug-in electric a decade later, in July 2019,with the landing of the Leaf
. Behind them, the local offer of this type of vehicles expanded and, even with less speed than in other countries, it advances to be interspersed among the fuel options.
The aforementioned Nissan was joined by Audi, Porsche and Renault among the automakers that have 100% electric cars. Among the hybrids, Toyota not only took the lead but is also currently the brand with the largest number of variants in its lineup, with six options. Possibly, the most accessible of this long list is the Corolla, which arrives from Brazil
. But also under its umbrella is the luxurious Lexus, which brings another five models.
Other variants of sustainable mobility in the country are vehicles with Mild Hybrid technology, which is capable of reducing fuel consumption and, therefore, CO2 emissions. In this format, the heat engine acts as the main driver, but is associated with an auxiliary electric motor that assists it in certain circumstances. Audi and Mercedes-Benz
are the automakers aiming at this type of hybrid systems and several models of their range in Argentina are already equipped with this option.
In Argentina, sales of hybrid and electric vehicles amounted to 5,871 in 2021, with an increase of 148% over the previous year
, according to the report of the Association of Automotive Dealers of the Argentine Republic (Acara). The growth in the commercialization of this kind of cars was of such magnitude that in 2021 it concentrated 55% of all the operations carried out since they started in Argentina in 2010.
