Woolworths secures renewables supply from Iberdrola Australia

    May 17, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

May 17 (Renewables Now) - Power company Iberdrola Australia said today that it has signed an agreement to supply 100% renewable electricity to Australian retailer Woolworths Group Ltd (ASX:WOW).

The agreement will see the supply flow to all of Woolworths Group’s operations in South Australia until December 31, 2030. This encompasses almost 70 supermarkets, 17 Big W stores and a regional distribution centre, Iberdrola Australia said.

Under the arrangement, Woolworths secured a retail power supply with the supply of renewable energy certificates to come from the newly constructed 320-MW Port Augusta Renewable Energy Park. The hybrid facility near Port Augusta, South Australia, consists of 50 wind turbines and some 250,000 solar panels. Its full production output is estimated at around 0.9 TWh of power per year.

The retailer’s power consumption levels account for around 1% of Australia’s total energy use, according to Iberdrola Australia. The group aims to use solely renewable energy by 2025.

“South Australia will be the first state where every one of our sites are powered by green energy, and we’re excited to use renewable energy generated locally to reduce the footprint of our stores from Roxby Downs to Renmark,” said Woolworths Group CEO Brad Banducci.

Iberdrola Australia is part of Spanish utility group Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE).
