Imerys plans 4.7 MW solar plant to power alumina factory in Bahrain

    May 17, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

May 17 (Renewables Now) - French industrial minerals producer Imerys S.A. (EPA:NK) has teamed up with Yellow Door Energy to build a 4.67-MWp solar plant at its white fused alumina factory in Bahrain.

More than 8,500 solar panels will be installed on an area of 25,000 sq m (6.17 acres) and will be connected to the internal distribution network of the factory which is operated jointly by Imerys and Manama-based Al Zayani Industries.

The plant is expected to produce 7.6 GWh of clean electricity in the first year of operation and meet between 15% and 20% of the factory’s energy consumption needs. It will help offset 4,800 tonnes of carbon emissions.

The electricity will be supplied to the factory under a power purchase agreement (PPA) between Imerys and Yellow Door Energy.

Midal Solar has been picked as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the project. Construction is set to start in the second half of this year with commissioning expected by 2023.

The project will support the French producer's target to cut its carbon emissions by 36% by the end of the decade.
