UK picks hydrogen innovation projects for GBP 60m of funding

    May 19, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

May 19 (Renewables Now) - The UK government today said it has awarded up to GBP 60 million (USD 74.6m/EUR 70.9m) of funding to 28 hydrogen projects across the UK under the Low Carbon Hydrogen Supply 2 (HySupply 2) competition.

The funding will support research and innovation in hydrogen production and transportation and will help to advance the UK hydrogen industry. The projects could contribute to the UK’s goal in its recent energy security strategy of up to 10 GW of hydrogen capacity by 2030.

"The British Energy Security Strategy made clear that we are backing hydrogen not just as a viable source of clean, affordable homegrown energy but as an emerging industry of the future in which the UK can lead the world,” said Business and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng.

Funding was awarded across two categories. Under Stream 2, some GBP 38 million were allotted to five projects to back demonstration of innovative hydrogen supply solutions. For instance, ITM Power (LON:ITM) will get almost GBP 9.3 million to build a next generation 5-MW electrolyser stack.

Under Stream 1 funding will be awarded in two phases. The first phase will see 23 projects receive about GBP 6 million to conduct feasibility studies on novel hydrogen supply solutions. For example, Cadent Gas Ltd has been awarded GBP 296,174 to study purifying hydrogen transported through the gas grid so that it can be used in vehicles.

      (GBP 1 = USD 1.243/EUR 1.181)
