Germany : Power generation from renewable energies is growing slowly

    May 20, 2022 - Al Bawaba Business

Contrary to the national trend, regenerative power generation in Baden-Wrttemberg increased in 2021. However, the expansion of renewables is still progressing slowly.

Contrary to the national trend, regenerative power generation in Baden-Wrttemberg has increased slightly by four percent to 18.9 terawatt hours (TWh). After the pandemic-related decline in 2020, total electricity generation has grown significantly. As a result, the share of renewable energies in gross electricity production fell from 41 to 37 percent last year.

Massive expansion of renewable energies necessary

"The expansion of renewable energies is progressing far too slowly," said Secretary of State for Energy Andre Baumann on May 11, 2022 in Stuttgart. The facts and figures compiled by the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Wrttemberg (ZSW) are unsatisfactory, added Baumann: "We have to expand wind and solar energy in the state much more powerfully and faster than before. On the one hand, to drastically reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions so that we can achieve our climate protection goals. And on the other hand, to free us from Russia's dependence on fossil energy. A massive expansion of renewable energies in the country is also urgently needed from an industrial policy point of view.

For this reason, it is very regrettable that more hard coal was used to generate electricity last year in view of the increased demand for electricity. "Instead, we need a higher share of renewables in electricity and heat generation," said Baumann. In order for more wind and photovoltaic systems to be built in the country, the duration of the approval process must be significantly reduced. On all levels.

The state government is working on disruptive solutions

The Task Force Renewable Energies set up in the state last autumn is intended to contribute to this . Baumann emphasized: But the task force cannot do magic, the results will only be visible in a few years. But we need the wind and solar systems as soon as possible. That is why we in the state government are currently working on disruptive solutions.

After the first lockdown in 2020, gross electricity consumption also increased from 65.8 to 69.6 TWh last year, so that the share of renewable energies in gross electricity consumption also fell from 27.6 percent to 27.1 percent.
