Austria's Wien Energie to produce green fuel from waste

    May 23, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

May 23 (Renewables Now) - Austrian energy company Wien Energie GmbH and partners from various industries have opened a 1-MW research facility in Vienna to produce green fuel from waste.

The demonstration facility is located on the site of the Simmeringer Haide incineration plant. It uses waste and residues such as wood waste, sewage sludge or paper residues to produce synthesis gas which is then converted into renewable diesel or green kerosene, Wien Energie said last week.

Wien Energie's managing director Karl Gruber considers the technology promising as such a plant on an industrial scale could produce up to 10 million litres of green fuel per year, saving up to 30,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. This fuel would be enough to refuel the entire public bus fleet in Vienna in a climate-neutral way.

The research project, known as Waste2Value, includes also the test operation of a bus running on the green fuel.

Additionally, the partners plan to test the production of green hydrogen from waste in the medium term.

Other participants in the Waste2Value project include SMS group Process Technologies, public transport provider Wiener Linien, power grid operator Wiener Netze, Oesterreichischen Bundesforste AG and Laakirchen Papier AG.
