    Public Citizen: CPS Energy STEP Extension Is Good News for San Antonians

    May 24, 2022 - Targeted News Service

      SAN ANTONIO, Texas, May 24 (TNSreact) -- Public Citizen issued the following statement on May 23, 2022:

      * * *

      The board of trustees for San Antonio's electric utility, CPS Energy, voted to extend the Save for Tomorrow Energy Plan (STEP). The program provides San Antonians with financial incentives to weatherize their homes, purchase energy-efficient appliances, install solar, or other measures that conserve energy. The program was last extended in January 2021 but was due to expire this July.

      Statement of DeeDee Belmares, San Antonio Climate Justice Organizer, Texas Office of Public Citizen:

      "Today's vote to extend the energy efficiency and conservation program, STEP, is great news for San Antonians and the environment. STEP will continue to deliver needed energy and bill savings to customers and help reduce the electricity demand, easing the stress on our vulnerable grid and our dependence on fossil fuels.

      "It will also provide funding for low-income customers to weatherize their homes and make them more energy-efficient and comfortable during the summer and winter months. Going forward, we are eager to work with CPS Energy to improve STEP by adding new programs that will improve access to rooftop solar for low-to-moderate-income residents. We thank the CPS Energy board for taking a vote that acknowledges we need an energy-efficient future."
