Modvion, Stora Enso to promote use of wood for wind turbines

    May 26, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

May 26 (Renewables Now) - Sweden’s Modvion AB, a developer of wooden towers for wind turbines, has partnered with Finnish forest products company Stora Enso OYJ (HEL:STERV) to bring wood into the focus of the wind turbine industry.

The new partners said that they want to establish wood as the material of choice for wind turbine towers and to demonstrate the vast possibilities in using wood in demanding constructions.

Modvion is developing its turbine towers using laminated veneer lumber (LVL), which it says is stronger than steel in proportion to its weight. LVL is also one of Stora Enso’s wood products.

Modvion’s towers are built in lightweight modules, and have the advantage of being easy to manipulate and transport on public roads without permits or road reconstruction. Also, with wood, CO2 emissions from the tower can be reduced by 90%, the Swedish company says.
