KYIV. May 31 (Interfax) - Energoatom State National Nuclear Energy Generating Company of Ukraine (NNEGC) has attracted a loan from Ukrgasbank (Kyiv) for UAH 1.5 billion, over $51 million at the current exchange rate, in order to purchase fresh nuclear fuel from Westinghouse in 2022, NNEGC said in a press release.
"The loan will render it possible to increase the purchase of U.S. fuel and ensure the efficient operation of the power units of Ukrainian nuclear power plants following the rejection of Russian nuclear fuel," according to the press release.
Energoatom had previously announced the complete refusal to purchase nuclear fuel produced in Russia.
Energoatom operates four functioning NPPs in Ukraine, including the Zaporizhzhya, South-Ukrainian, Rivne, and Khmelnytsky NPPs, with 15 power units equipped with water-cooled power reactors with a total installed electrical capacity of 13.8 GW.
The official exchange rate as on May 31, 2022, is UAH 29.25/$1.
