Europe's largest integrated renewable hydrogen hub starts up in Spain

    May 31, 2022 - CE Noticias Financieras

      Madrid 31 MAY 2022 - 13:54CEST

HyDeal España, the first industrial implementation of the consortium formed by ArcelorMittal, Enagás, Grupo Fertiberia and DH2 Energy, has selected Técnicas Reunidas, Vinci Construction (in collaboration with Cobra IS,

a VINCI Group company) and PowerChina Guizhou to carry out the technical design, architecture and supply chain of its first hydrogen plants in Spain.

These three companies will design the necessary systems for the production of hydrogen through solar energy throughout 2022, presenting their proposals to reach the production and cost levels set by HyDeal Spain, as reported by the consortium in a joint statement.

TSK, from Asturias, will be in charge of supporting the project as the engineering representative of the platform, working together with the rest in the development and construction of the hydrogen production plants planned by HyDeal, which will form the largest integrated hub of renewable and competitive hydrogen in Europe. This is a further step towards making HyDeal competitive with fossil fuels.

Announced in February 2022, HyDeal Spain's goal is to supply renewable and competitively priced hydrogen to a major industrial complex located in Asturias, through solar plants located in the northern half of Spain, whose total installed capacity is expected to reach 9.5 gigawatts (GW) of solar power and 7.4 GW of electrolyzers.

Production is scheduled to start by the end of 2025, with the forecast to produce around 150,000 tons of renewable hydrogen per year from 2026, reaching 330,000 tons in 2030.

In addition, ArcelorMittal and Grupo Fertiberia have announced their intention to contract, together with other large buyers, the supply of 6.6 million tons of renewable hydrogen for 20 years.

As Thierry Lepercq, CEO of the platform and spokesperson for HyDeal Ambition, explained, "We are proud to have the support of these world-class EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contracting experts who share our goal of supplying large-scale competitive green hydrogen in record time. This is a resounding vote of confidence in HyDeal's model and excellent news for all energy users in Spain and beyond who are looking for safe and competitive alternatives to fossil fuels at a critical time in the energy markets.
