Iberdrola, FCC to set blade recycling facility in Spain

    June 1, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

June 1 (Renewables Now) - Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE) said that it has partnered with Spanish environmental services firm FCC Ambito to launch EnergyLOOP, a company dedicated to recycling components from renewable energy projects.

The first task for EnergyLOOP will be to invest around EUR 10 million (USD 10.7m) to set up a recycling facility in the Spanish region of Navarre, where components of wind turbine blades can be recovered for use in other sectors.

The future plant will be located in the southern part of Navarre so it can be close to some of Spain’s first wind farms and well connected to other regions with plenty of wind farms, Iberdrola explained.

The Spanish utility is participating in EnergyLOOP through its start-up programme Perseo.

The initiative has the support of Navarre’s government and wind turbine manufacturer Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA (BME:SGRE), which has signed a collaboration agreement with EnergyLOOP.

According to Iberdrola, Europe will start dismantling around 5,700 turbines per year in 2030, either due to repowering or wind farms reaching the end of their useful life.

FCC Ambito is a subsidiary of waste management company FCC Servicios Medio Ambiente, which is a division of Spanish construction group Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas SA (BME:FCC).
