Shell planning up to 2.1 GW of solar in Brazil

    June 1, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

June 1 (Renewables Now) - Shell Energy Brasil, a local unit of oil and gas major Shell Plc (LON:SHEL), intends to build up to 2.1 GW of solar parks in Brazil's Minas Gerais, the state's government announced this week.

Under a newly-signed protocol of intent, the European company will invest around BRL 7 billion (USD 1.5bn/EUR 1.4bn) in the development of five photovoltaic (PV) plants in the North, Northwest and Central regions of the state.

More specifically, Shell will study installations in the cities of Corinto in the Central region, Arinos and Brasilandia de Minas in the Northwest, and Janauba and Varzea da Palma in the North of the state. If all five PV parks are built, the government expects their combined output to be able to meet the demand of a town with 2 million inhabitants.

Construction works are scheduled to commence in January 2023, while commissioning of the first plant is set to take place in January 2025.

Currently, Minas Gerais has 2.4 GW of installed solar capacity, according to local solar association Absolar.
