    June 9, 2022 - Al Bawaba Business

Candu Energy Inc., a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group (TSX: SNC), is pleased to announce the appointment of seasoned nuclear industry executive Stephanie Smith as Senior Vice-President of Engineering for SNC-Lavalins Canadian nuclear business. Based in Toronto, she will report to Bill Fox, Executive Vice-President, Nuclear, Canada. The appointment took effect on June 6th. Ms. Smith takes over from Kevin Jones, who is retiring. He will remain accessible to SNC-Lavalin in a consulting capacity going forward.

Im thrilled to welcome Stephanie to SNC-Lavalin, said Bill Fox, Executive Vice-President, Nuclear, Canada, SNC?Lavalin. Attracting top talent to our nuclear business, one of SNC-Lavalins key end-markets, ensures we can continue to deliver best-in-class service to the nuclear utilities around the world offering solutions to Net Zero and energy security challenges. Stephanies expertise will ensure we remain at the forefront of nuclear engineering in a rapidly advancing marketplace. Id also like to thank Kevin Jones for his leadership and contributions over many years. We wish him a well-deserved retirement.

As SVP of Engineering, Ms. Smith will be responsible for driving SNC-Lavalins Canadian nuclear business toward its strategic objectives across profitability, technical excellence, and innovation. She will build on the outcomes-driven environment across the business, with a focused approach to performance management. Ms. Smith will also focus on transitioning the nuclear engineering group from an operations-oriented model to a client-service driven, competitive and growth-oriented culture. Her oversight will include the design and delivery of CANDU reactors, technical support for the fleet of CANDU reactors around the world, the development of advanced fuel technologies for implementation in international markets, and support for small modular reactors (SMRs).

      Background of Stephanie Smith

Ms. Smith was previously President and CEO at CANDU Owners Group an organization of utilities worldwide operating the CANDU reactors found on four continents, for which SNC-Lavalin is the steward and original equipment manufacturer. She also has extensive experience at Ontario Power Generation (OPG) operator of the Darlington and Pickering Nuclear Generating Stations in Ontario, Canada. Beginning at OPG as an entry-level systems engineer, she was promoted to progressively more senior roles. Most recently at OPG, she was Deputy Site Vice-President of Darlington station, and also completed a secondment to the World Association of Nuclear Operations.

Ms. Smith has also made history as a female nuclear engineer. At the Pickering Nuclear Station, she became the first female licensed shift manager, and later the first female nuclear plant manager in Canada. She is also a Vice President at the non-profit organization Women in Nuclear (WiN) Canada, an organization SNC-Lavalin proudly supports.
