    Saitec initiates procedures for the installation of a pre-commercial offshore wind farm on the Costa Brava

      The Medfloat Pilot Parc Project, of fifty megawatts, has started with the presentation of the Initial Project Document for its evaluation by the competent environmental body, which has been asked for the scope of the environmental impact study; however, Saitec is already working on the drafting of the Environmental Impact Study. According to the press release issued by the Basque engineering company, Medfloat Pilot Parc will involve the creation of a test infrastructure in the Levantino-Balearic Demarcation "for the testing, demonstration and validation of SATH technology, as well as the elements and different prototypes linked to it, necessary for the development, operation and end of the useful life of the park".

      Saitec also wants to demonstrate "the technical, environmental and social feasibility of future developments of floating offshore wind energy, and particularly of the SATH technology, in the Mediterranean". The engineering company also says that it also intends to convert this pre-commercial pilot park into "a pioneering project to investigate the possibilities of shared use with other activities, especially fishing and aquaculture, and to promote employment and boost the supply chain of offshore wind energy in Catalonia". Saitec estimates that the installation will produce electricity equivalent to the consumption of 50,000 homes in a year.

      The selected area in the vicinity of the Gulf of Roses, which has the right wind and depth conditions to implement this project, has been provisionally defined as a Priority Use for offshore wind in the Maritime Spatial Management Plans (POEM).

      Medfloat Pilot Parc is an initiative aligned with the objectives of climate neutrality, which also represents the progress of the company Saitec in the validation of SATH technology and is the next step after the development of the pioneering 2 MW DemoSATH project, which is in the process of construction in the Port of Bilbao. The objective of this other pilot project, carried out in collaboration with the German company RWE, is to test the technology and advance in the industrialized manufacturing process of this type of solutions.

      Once its construction is completed in the Port of Bilbao, it will be installed in the BiMEP test area (Armintza, Bizkaia), where tests will be carried out for two years, providing very useful information for the environmental evaluation of MedFloat. In this way, DemoSATH will become the first floating offshore wind turbine connected to the Spanish electricity grid with the capacity to generate energy equivalent to the consumption of 2,000 homes for one year.
