Rosatom sees no technical possibility for Western partners to refuse Russian nuclear fuel in coming years

June 17, 2022 - Interfax Russia & CIS Energy Newswire

ST. PETERSBURG. June 17 (Interfax) - Rosatom state nuclear energy corporation does not see any technical possibility for its Western partners to refuse Russian nuclear fuel in the coming years, Alexei Likhachev, CEO of Rosatom, said at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2022.

"I do not see any technological possibilities [to refuse fuel from Russia]," Likhachev said.

Rosatom's CEO said that it was theoretically possible to create new fuel assemblies in 10 years, "though this is much money and makes very little sense. Thus far, we do not see any regulatory or technical restrictions in our work," Likhachev concluded.

Sweden's Vattenfall had earlier refused to receive a planned supply of Russian nuclear fuel for local nuclear power plants, and Germany had announced withdrawing an investment application for establishing a joint venture between TVEL and Framatome for producing nuclear fuel in the country.
