June 20 (Renewables Now) - The US Department of the Interior's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has completed its draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) for the 1,100-MW Ocean Wind 1 project, the first offshore wind project in New Jersey.
The agency said on Friday the notice of availability for the DEIS will be published on June 24 and will be followed by a 45-day public comment period, with the feedback to inform the final EIS.
This marks the first time the current US administration publishes a DEIS for an offshore wind energy project.
The Ocean Wind 1 project is owned by Denmark’s Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED) in partnership with US-based Public Service Enterprise Group Inc (NYSE:PEG). It will consist of up to 98 GE wind turbines. If all of them are approved, the wind farm’s estimated capacity will range from 1,215 MW to 1,440 MW, BOEM said.
The project, located about 15 miles (24 km) off the coast of southern New Jersey, will also include up to three offshore substations. Export cables will connect it to the shore in Ocean County and Cape May County.
