SSE, FuturEnergy break ground on 30-MW Irish wind project

June 20 (Renewables Now) - SSE Renewables, a unit of UK utility SSE plc (LON:SSE), and its partner FuturEnergy Ireland has kicked off construction of the 30-MW Lenalea wind farm project in Ireland’s County Donegal.

The milestone, marked by the pour of low-carbon concrete for the first of seven wind turbine foundations, was announced by SSE Renewables last week.

To be located within the townlands of Cark, Killmansey, Lenalea, Kirkneedy and Rareagh, the Lenalea wind park will be installed at a total cost of EUR 36 million (USD 37.9m). It will be equipped with seven Vestas V117-4.2 MW turbines in 4.3 MW operating mode that are expected to be capable of generating electricity for more than 20,000 homes annually.

SSE Renewables and FuturEnergy will aim to reach commercial operations in late 2023. The partners expect turbine deliveries to begin in the spring of next year, with installation works scheduled to be carried out during the summer period of 2023.

The Lenalea project was among the winners in Ireland’s first competitive Renewable Energy Support Scheme (RESS) auction for onshore wind.
