SSE cleared to build O&M base for 800-MW Irish offshore wind project

    June 20, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

June 20 (Renewables Now) - SSE Renewables has secured planning consent that will enable it to build an operations and maintenance (O&M) facility for its up to 800-MW Arklow Bank Wind Park Phase 2 project in Irish waters.

The approval was granted by the Wicklow County Council, the unit of utility SSE plc (LON:SSE) said on Friday.

The proposed O&M facility is planned to be built at the south dock in Arklow Harbour and will serve as the onshore support base used to control, operate and maintain the offshore wind park. The complex will also include a sustainable education centre, a pontoon system and a designated quayside and berth facilities to accommodate crew transfer vessels.

Arklow Bank Wind Park Phase 2 is a continuation of the 25.2-MW Arklow Bank wind park, built in 2003/04 and owned by GE Energy. The new wind park will be located between 6km and 13km off the County Wicklow coastline, expanding the existing seven-turbine complex. SSE Renewables plans to bring the second plant online by 2028.

Last month, the developer obtained consent to develop the onshore grid infrastructure for connecting the wind farm to the national power grid. It is meanwhile seeking a Maritime Area Consent (MAC) for the offshore project from the Irish government.
