The hydro-wind power plant of El Hierro adds more than 2 million to the Cabildo's current budget.

    June 22, 2022 - CE Noticias Financieras

Gorona del Viento El Hierro, the company in charge of the management, operation and maintenance of the 'Central Hidroeólica de El Hierro', has approved the distribution of 3.5 million Euros in dividends, corresponding to the fiscal year 2021. Of these, 2.3 million Euros are for the Cabildo de El Hierro, as majority shareholder of the company and owner of almost 66% of the shares. With respect to the previous year, Gorona del Viento now increases its profits by more than one million euros. The majority public company is also formed by the Government of the Canary Islands, with 3.23% of the shares, the Technological Institute of the Canary Islands, with 7.74%, and Endesa, with 23.21%. A configuration which, the president explained, has been changing because since the company was constituted in 2004, the Cabildo has been acquiring shares, taking into account the relevance of this project for El Hierro.

So far, Gorona has allowed to carry out actions such as giving free energy to all the electric cars on the Island and visitors through the 7 public recharging points, launching initiatives to raise awareness on environmental saving, favoring the development of important sporting events or that clubs that bring together many athletes can carry out their activities, according to the CEO, Santiago González. In addition, and as one of the most important actions, Gorona del Viento launched an Office of Sustainability and Environmental Innovation, which until now has provided advisory services to individuals, companies and institutions, and which from now on will expand its range of actions to be the transversal axis of sustainability on the island for citizens.

Alpidio Armas, president of Gorona del Viento and the Cabildo: "This is welcome news for the island, demonstrating once again that the hydro wind power plant does bring benefits for its inhabitants and that in addition to the environmental benefits, promotion and visibility, or boosting sustainability policies, the Gorona del Viento project has economic benefits for the people of the island. Although Gorona del Viento has no power to change the price of electricity, as all Spaniards are priced in the same way, regulator by law, the participation of the Cabildo in society is the way in which the herreños can receive the economic benefit more directly. It should be recalled that the Institution herreña has been using these dividends in aid for the installation of self-consumption, purchase of electric vehicles and recharging points, financing of employment plans such as Educating in Energy Saving Red Cross, and a long etcetera".

Since the energy self-supply project with renewables exceeded the threshold of 40% coverage of annual demand, or even since on August 9, 2015 the diesel engines were completely stopped for 2 hours to give way to 100% with clean energies, the Power Plant became a "benchmark for the sector", as indicated by the company. "Never before has an isolated territory been able to rely exclusively on intermittent sources, giving stability to the electricity system; El Hierro has been able to do so, even for more than 24 consecutive days, and it is an example that maximizing the use of renewables is possible when the resource is available and using the right technology," it adds.
