Eastern Generation gets nod for 135 MW of NY batteries, plans more

June 23 (Renewables Now) - The New York Public Service Commission (NYPSC) has approved an application from Eastern Generation LLC for a permit to build over 135 MW of energy storage at the Astoria Generating Station.

Specifically, the company has obtained a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) for the Astoria project and intends to apply for permits of the same type for two other energy storage facilities, totalling 350 MW, at its Gowanus and Narrows stations. All three battery projects are located at existing power plants.

The Astoria scheme is part of the Luyster Creek Energy Storage project, which will help maximise the energy that renewables can provide to the system.

"The Luyster Creek projects can be fully operational as soon as 2025 if market conditions permit and proper economic incentive investments are made by the state," said Mark Sudbey, CEO of Eastern Generation.

Eastern Generation, which is an affiliate of private equity firm ArcLight Capital Partners LLC, owns power plants that account for more than 18% of New York City's power generation capacity.
