Higueruela wind farm receives award for rural integration

    June 24, 2022 - CE Noticias Financieras

The municipality of Higueruela in Albacete is the perfect case of successful integration of wind energy with the rural environment. For this reason, the Spanish Wind Energy Association (AEE) yesterday presented the Eolo Award for Rural Integration 2022 to its mayor, Isabel Martínez Arnedo.

The installation in 1999 of five wind farms changed the history of the town and gave a real boost to its economy. Currently, the municipality has a population of more than 1,100 inhabitants and the wind power installed in this town is 161.02 MW, distributed in five wind farms (Cerro de la Punta, Higueruela, Malefatón, Virgen de los Llanos I and Virgen de los Llanos II). All of them add up to 243 wind turbines managed by Iberdrola.

The wind energy project has enabled the town to increase its income considerably, allowing it to build, for example, a nursing home that has provided employment for many local women.

"The arrival of wind energy in the municipality generated numerous jobs and has allowed us to create and maintain public services and facilities that improve the quality of life of our neighbors, guaranteeing quality and stability for all of us who have bet on making this town our home," highlighted Isabel Martínez Arnedo, mayoress of Higueruela, when collecting the award.

The generation of employment and the economic impulse have allowed the improvement and expansion of different services. Sports and music schools, a youth center, a toy library, a library, a nursery school and different sports facilities, among other services, have been provided. Now, Higueruela seeks to promote tourism by relying on its renowned wind farm.

"Higueruela perfectly represents the spirit of the wind energy sector, which carries in its DNA values that make up the personality of wind energy wherever it is present: stability, improvement of society, employment, respect, progress, wealth, welfare and coexistence," said AEE's CEO, Juan Virgilio Márquez.

      Wind power in Albacete

Albacete is the third Spanish province with the highest installed capacity in Spain. The wind power capacity is represented by 2,088 MW distributed in 83 wind farms. Its wind power generation of 4,199 MWh in 2021 makes it the fourth Spanish province with the highest wind power production. In Castilla La Mancha, the installed capacity is 3,954.84 MW, which makes it the 3rd autonomous community with the highest installed wind power capacity in Spain.
