Eneco JV to supply green power to Boskalis ships in Rotterdam

    June 27, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

June 27 (Renewables Now) - A joint venture between the Port of Rotterdam Authority and Dutch utility Eneco will be building shore-based green power facilities on a Boskalis-operated site in Waalhaven harbour to supply electricity from wind and solar parks to moored vessels.

Dutch dredging and heavy-lift company Royal Boskalis Westminster NV (AMS:BOKA) announced this on Monday, saying that the new facilities will be delivering 2 GWh of green power annually to replace the generators that are often used on board. The installation is expected to be completed at the very start of June 2023.

Eneco and the port authority will own the new plants and offer the electricity ‘as a service’, while Boskalis will realise the grid connection under its own management.

According to the announcement, the utility will be supplying the green electricity from “Dutch Eneco wind & solar sources”.

The project is co-financed by the City of Rotterdam and the European Union. It will represent the third quayside electricity installation for seagoing vessels in the Port of Rotterdam after the deployments on the Rozenburg peninsula and the Hoek van Holland ferry terminal.
