90 percent of electricity consumption covered by renewables in May

    June 27, 2022 - APA EconomicNews Service

Around 90 percent of the electricity consumed in Austria in May was covered by renewable generation - out of a total consumption of 4,445 gigawatt hours (GWh), this amounted to around 3,980 GWh, the transmission grid operator APG announced on Monday. However, capacity deficits in the electricity grid resulted in additional costs of around EUR 27 million, which is why there is a need to invest in grid expansion, APG says. The increase in renewable electricity generation in May was mainly made possible by generation from run-of-river power plants, which at 2,929 GWh increased by around 34 per cent compared to the previous month. This is a typical seasonal development, explained APG Chief Technology Officer Gerhard Christiner.
