Govt issues advisory for saving energy

    June 27, 2022 - Yomiuri Shimbun

The government on Sunday issued a power crunch advisory for Monday over a possible supply-demand imbalance in areas served by Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. (TEPCO).

It is the first time for the government to issue an advisory since the new alert level was introduced in May.

Extremely hot weather is forecast for Monday, and the reserve margin — the total capacity in the power supply system — is expected to fall to 3.7% in the evening in TEPCO-served areas.

In the system, advisories are issued at around 4 p.m. the day before the margin is expected to drop below 5%.

There are two other levels in the government’s power crunch-notification system: “make preparations” (the least severe level), and “warning,” for when the margin is expected to fall below 3%.

Nation continues to swelter Central Tokyo experienced the hottest June day ever recorded on Sunday, with the mercury climbing to 36.2 C.

Sunday was the second consecutive day in which the temperature exceeded 35 C in Tokyo.

Temperatures of 35 C or higher had been recorded at 29 locations nationwide by 3 p.m. on the day.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the temperature reached 36.8 C in Isesaki, Gunma Prefecture. The day before, Isesaki reached 40.2 C, the highest temperature ever recorded there.
