Wartsila to supply 50-MW/100-MWh storage system for SSE project

    June 27, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

June 27 (Renewables Now) - Finnish technology group Wartsila Corp (HEL:WRT1V) on Monday said it will supply a 50-MW/100-MWh energy storage system to SSE Plc (LON:SSE) for the UK utility’s first battery project, located in Salisbury, Wiltshire in South West England.

Expected to come online in September 2023, this will be the first battery connected directly to the transmission grid by SSE’s new solar and battery division. The UK company acquired the project development rights for the storage facility in the summer of 2021.

“Today is a key milestone for SSE as we build out our first battery storage project at Salisbury, but it is also just the beginning of a multi-GW pipeline of solar and battery projects to come,” SSE’s director of solar and battery Richard Cave-Bigley stated, adding that battery storage will have a key role in supporting UK decarbonisation.

Wartsila said it booked the order in April. It is delivering its fully integrated, modular energy storage system GridSolv Quantum and its energy management software for the project. The company noted it is currently installing energy storage systems of similar size across the UK.
