OX2 files permit application for 5.5-GW Swedish offshore wind project

    June 27, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

June 27 (Renewables Now) - Renewables developer OX2 AB (STO:OX2) has taken another step in the development of its Aurora offshore wind project with an estimated capacity of 5.5 GW in Sweden by filing a permit application to build the wind farm under the act of Sweden’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

The company in March submitted an application for a Natura 2000 permit for the wind power complex, which will be located between the islands of Gotland and Oland and will be made up of as many as 370 offshore wind turbines with hub heights of up to 370 metres (1,214 ft).

The enormous wind farm, currently in an early stage of development, is expected to produce 24 TWh of electricity per year, equivalent to the usage of about 5 million households or about 17% of Sweden’s total electricity consumption.

“Together with our other planned offshore wind farms it constitutes a significant part of the electricity production Sweden needs, to reach the climate targets and to secure the production and energy independence of Sweden,” said OX2 Sweden country manager Hillevi Priscar.

The developer has also filed applications for the 1.8-GW Triton and 1.7-GW Galatea-Galene offshore wind power projects in Swedish waters.
